Hi Seniors!  We miss you! It's Mrs. Vitoria here, one of your many school counselors. We have Dr. Chavez, as well as Mrs. Hays-Sanchez as one of our counselors.  If you have any questions at the end of this presentation, feel free to email us or call us at any time with an application question, or vocational questions, or any other questions you need right now. We are here for you.  So let's get started.  So this is your Senior 411 presentation about California Community Colleges, vocational schools, military, and the workforce.  Okay.  Let's get started. Transcript Review.  So... hopefully at this time you have a transcript or a unofficial transcript in front of you.  If not, you can email Mrs. Hays-Sanchez or myself or Mrs. Cole (and her email's up there to get an unofficial transcript) so you can review your grades.  You will need an official transcript (obviously) to be sent to the community colleges once we have final grades at the end of the school year (when you graduate).  As you look at that transcript, if there are any errors, you need to contact the Registrar Mrs. Cole.  So, for example, at the top it has your name, address, phone number, all those fun facts about yourself and make sure those are all correct... and they need a match... because when you do your financial aid (or any other information) it needs to match up with what is on your Birth Certificate, things like that.  So if you have any questions about that let us know.  Let's go over the GPA real quick.  That's at the top left corner of your transcript.   So your total GPA is your weighted GPA, which includes everything you've taken based upon GPA... and your class rank is a determined based upon that GPA.  So that's weighted, meaning I took Honors English so that I have that bump if I got an A (or an AP class). The CSU GPA so... that's the California State University GPA is weighted as well, but it just has A - G courses... so A - G courses are the approved courses.  You can find it on the A - G Course List... and if you have more questions about that we can help you as well... and then your Cal Grant GPA is unweighted, just 10 through 12.  So if you have 12th grade grades on there that's going to be included... and then it excludes your P.E. and any remedial course, like Math Foundations, or if you took Language Live, or anything like that in our district.  Okay. Grades... A - G courses. This doesn't technically matter for the Community College... it does matter matter for the California State Universities, and the UCs and the Privates, so you must have Cs or better to be a part of that category to go to the 4-year college straight out of high school.   To go to the Community College you must just gain a diploma and meet graduation requirements. Courses required for graduation... you must have an A through a D... so F does not mean fantastic... you must take a required course over again if you fail it.  You'll definitely be contacted by me and Mrs. Hays-Sanchez if that is the case as well... but just make sure you look it over, circle it as we go through those transcripts if we need to make up a course (that is a core course). If you have any questions, let us know. Let's go to the next slide. Okay.  Quickly.  Here's our graduation requirements for the Class of 2021... So... it's current Seniors! So we got Social Science... so we have three years... During your Sophomore year, you took World History... Your 11th grade year (so your Junior year) you took U.S. History (so you should have two grades for that), two grades in World History... and then, this year, you have 5 credits of Econ... So a term of Econ and a term of American Government.  So, for example, some of you may have (from August to October) took Economics and then, October to January, you took American Government (or visa-versa).  So you must pass those classes in order to graduate.  You must pass all years of English, so English 1, 2, 3 and 4 (all four) in order to graduate with Ds or better. Math... thirty (30) credits of Math. So you must... the main requirement is you must pass Integrated Math I in order to graduate.  I know that there are some questions (because some of us took Math Foundations). So if I took Math Foundations first, my first year would be Math Foundations, my second year would be Integrated Math I, my third year would be Integrated Math II. Let's say that I took Integrated Math IA and IB... so that counts as two years. So let's say I did Math Foundations, IM IA and IM IB.   I have completed those graduation requirements.  If you have more questions about this, let us know and we can help you with that. Okay.  You must take two years of Foreign Language... so we have two options here at Liberty Ranch High School... Spanish and German... so you must take Spanish I, Spanish II, or German I and German II. You can take Spanish I and then German I (that will count as two years of Foreign Language) but it does not qualify you to be A-G to go to a 4-year. You need 10 credits of Visual and Performing Arts, so what that is is our Arts, Ceramics, Sculpture, Digital Photography, Floral Design... There are so many more... Band, Guitar, Choir... You must take one of those throughout your high school career in order to meet the graduation requirements... and then Electives.   So all the excess... so anything fun you've taken, even if it's the second of those courses, so Ceramics II... maybe you took the third year of German... maybe you took an extra Science... maybe you took the... Welding classe,  anything like that... Cooking, Sports Medicine... and that all counts for Electives. (sorry) Okay... and then, at the bottom, we have Health and PE.   So PE you have 20 credits of PE you need to graduate... so Freshmen year you took 10, and then let's say Sophomore year you took 10, yet maybe skipped it but you need to have two years of PE in order to graduate... and then Freshmen year you should have taken Health... so you must pass that in order to graduate. If you have questions about this, please, like I said, I will say at multiple times throughout this presentation, to email your counselor if you have questions about the graduation requirements. Okay next slide.  Why Go to College or Career School.   So, for example, there's a lot of us that maybe they just want to go to the workforce, right out of high school, having a diploma in hand.   The stats here (and you can go through them on your own) just shows if you have some type of educational certificate or associate's degree, or maybe went to a trade school... maybe I'm a heavy operator and I got that certificate in a certain amount of time... or I went to Paul Mitchell hair school... I will be paid more than just going to work right out of high school with nothing.   Or maybe I got a Bachelor's Degree or a Master's Degree... and it kind of gives you the steps of what happens (the average I should say) if you have those certificates or degrees. Next slide. California Community Colleges... we have got a lot of them guys... there are 116 (that's pretty crazy).  You must have a high school diploma to attend a California Community College.  I have a lot of filing periods on here, so like, for example, I kind of focused on our area because a lot of us go to the surrounding areas, especially since they have the tuition for free for some of us.  Cosumnes River College... It is open.   So if you would like to apply to CRC, it is open until May, starting right now... so if you want to start for Fall 2021 (or even Summer) do it now.  Same thing with Folsom Lake, Sac City, and American River because they're all in the Los Rios District.  They are open.  At the end, just make sure that you maybe go to your ParentSquare and check out... Dr. Chavez has a couple dates and flyers that show you a person that's going to be able to help you from CRC that helps you thought the CCC application. One of the other community colleges, for example, like Delta... they're going to open up in February (possibly earlier).   Just keep looking at the website.   For other California community colleges is January, so we just need to make sure that you have applied by the end of the school year... so May would be (you know) the final-final.   The community college recommends you complete these steps for success, so the CCCA Apply has all the community colleges in California.  It's a really awesome website to go through and kind of find what community college works for you... and let's you just go on there and apply.   So that is a definite good source. I suggest (and it's part of some of these requirements) that you fill out the FAFSA... and there will be a presentation on the FAFSA done by Dr. Chavez... and it should be posted by now or it will be posted so you can fill out your financial aid to get possible free money for school (right, we all want that).   You must complete an orientation. It's more than likely going to be online, so make sure you complete that orientation once you are enrolled and pick classes (all that fun stuff).   Next is you're going to be placed in classes. You're going to have an assigned counselor, going to pick classes, and then in your course placement... with different types of information that will use, like the high school transcript, your highest English and Math grade of a C or better.   In the past we use the CAASPP because of COVID-19.   We did not take the CAASPP last year in spring with you current Seniors, so they will be using different measures in order to place you. Also it is $46 a unit, so a lot cheaper than the CSU's and UC's. And then... there is the California Dream Act (which is a great dream) that will help you pay for the Community College and fill out the FAFSA.  Please let us know if any questions.  We will be here to help you.  We will Zoom if you.  We will do whatever we can to help you with these applications to make sure that you are sign up for school... next school year.  Okay. Next slide.  Vocational. We added some fun stuff to this slide, so we added a couple different examples.  There's obviously so many more vocational schools in our area.  These are some ones that I am I thought they really important which a lot of students ask about.   For example, there is Universal Technical Institute (UTI).   UTI has a lot of different categories that they specialize in to give people and students trade certificates so they can go to the workforce quicker than getting an associates, or the community college, or a bachelor's degree... so you can look at those there.   There's Collison, Auto Tech, Diesel, Marine Mechanic, Welding, tons of stuff.  There's Carrington College, has a lot of medical and dental, and even vet programs that are really big as well. These are all private, so it's going to be a lot more money to attend these private trade trade schools, as well as their Sacramento Job Corps... so they have a ton of different trade vocational programs... and then I also listed a couple Cosmetology schools in our area.  Paul Mitchell (you've probably heard of already), the Federico Beauty Institute, Cosmo Beauty Academy... like I said these are a lot more expensive.  So, for example, there great...  There's a lot of great options here... but there's also the option that most of these (majority, I say 95% of them) are offered at the community college level... so if I would like to, for example, take a Welding program and I say "I really want to do well in technology." Well there are a lot of schools for a lot cheaper, like California community colleges that only charge $46 a unit to take Welding trade certificates compared to the vocational, like UTI,  but it's whatever fits best for you and we will help whatever goal you have in mind. Also... So, to apply, you need to apply at least six weeks in advance. I say apply in Spring to get ahead of it.  There will be a lot of kids trying to apply.  You must have your high school diploma and they will be taking Math and English placement exams to be placed in your classes. Like I said there's only... these are only a few of many private vocational schools in our Sacramento area... they're all over (you know) the United States, so.   If you have more questions, let us know we're here to help you. We're going to go to the next slide.  Military. So military requirements. You must have a high school diploma, so that is a requirement (you can't get away with not having one to go to the military).  The ASVAB... So that is a test that is taken twice a year here at Liberty Ranch, usually we offer it in October... and we're actually going to have one April 16th (is scheduled as of right now for 2021).   That is going to have a score that the military branch will take into account when they pick the possible occupation that you will go into you after basic training.... Another thing about the military... online courses. So, if currently, I am taking FLEX, for example, on our campus (are obviously online), just make sure you talk to your recuiter and let them know... because sometimes they are not accepting online courses besides are current Liberty Ranch curriculum... so make sure you let them know, or maybe there's a limit of how many you ought to take. Make sure you are in communication with them. Currently all branches of the military are giving preference to high school seniors, so you right now have preference over the 19 year old that graduated last year. If you wait until after you graduate, you'll be placed on a waiting list... so if this is something you are wanting to do, make sure you were on-board with getting the information now... or if you need help from us let us know.  Okay... and then, if you're interested, please locate nearest main recruitment office near you.  There's one in Elk Grove, one off the Laguna exit over there so... that's another good place to go check it out and get some information. We're going to go to the next slide. Financial Aid.   Like I said, this is just a little snippet.  There will be a whole presentation about financial aid coming out to you soon.  First the things I want you to remind you of okay... so 1st Semester (we're in 1st Semester right now).   Look up scholarships. So there's a website called fastweb (so it's kind of highlighted there).  It's just a website you can go on with the different characteristics of yourself, so, for example, maybe your ethnicity, your different background,  different things you like to do, and they will match different scholarships to you so that you can fill them out and get some free money... because we all need that when we go to community college or we go to the four-year.   Also, you probably need to ask for some recommendations for some of these scholarships... So you would like, on ParentSquare, through the counselor page, there is the brage sheet... that is huge for letters of recommendation.  I require it every time my kid ask for a letter of recommendation as do some of the teachers.   So what it is is you could ask for it there (or it is in ParentSquare) where you can just print off there and fill it out and scan it to us so that we have all the information to write you the best possible letter... for scholarships or for the colleges you are applying to. You need to give us some time.  I say always give us a week or two to write this letter so that (you know) we can write the best letter possible... (it's not like a quick one for you). So, also (let's see here)... So, certain private schools always require that you go through this website right here... it's listed here (the red one)... profileonline.collegeboard.com Okay... and then the next possible fun thing... submit the FAFSA, the free application for Federal student aid, or the California Dream Act Application... October 1st (so it's already open)... and it closes March 2nd.  You will need to use your 2019 income tax information. So not yours, your parents... Your parents' 2019 income tax information will go into that application to figure out how much money that they can give you for community college or for the 4-year.  If you are completing the FAFSA, create an FAFSA ID... so everybody needs one... you need one, your mom, your dad, whoever your guardian... needs to have as a FSA ID.   If you have a sibling that has already attended a four-year or community in the last couple of years, they probably already have a FSA ID and they will need to retrieve that somehow... So either they remember it... or there's another way to retrieve it. There is the Cash for College website. Those are on ParentSquare under Dr. Chavez's page... and you can get different, additional help on the FAFSA and the California Dream Act. Okay. We're going to go to the next page. 2nd Semester.   So Spring time, right? Continue to look up scholarships. We obviously have through ParentSquare (like I keep saying), the district website.  We also have our Facebook so the Liberty Ranch Couseling Department Facebook.   There are scholarships on there... all those places were you can find a scholarship in our community... anything we have listed that you can get some free money (I keep saying that because it's so, so important that you guys look those up). Deadline to submit the FAFSA is March 2nd (that is in 2nd Semester). Make sure you verify your information on the Student Aid Report (the SAR) if you haven't already... so that's the Student Aid Report... so after you've already submitted the FASFA... For the college you are attending, ask for further documentation... so make sure you're checking your email.  The personal email that you have assigned to all your applications and the FAFSA.  You are checking that weekly. I would say every other day just to make sure, because you don't want to miss anything... and then you also need to create a webgrants4students student account.  It's webgrants4students.com to manage your information about the Cal Grant award... so did you get what money did you get from financial aid (did you get the Cal grant) and that will be the website that you see what you have gotten from financial aid. We're going to go to the next slide... This is just a little example.  If you can see... The blue screen is obviously the FAFSA website (what it looks like)... And then the California Dream Act, a website, what it looks like... and a link (if you need it) to fill it out. The fill out the FAFSA or the California Dream Act starting October 1st... and you need to make sure you click on the 2021-2022 school year... Not this year beause you are a Senior. Next school year you will be attending a community college or 4-year. The deadline to submit (like I keep saying) is March 2nd.  Do not be late! Log in your student's account at each college you are accepted to.  Look up your financial aid awards.  Accept each of them.   You have to accept them or else you will not get them.  Okay.  Make sure you remember. Take Community College Classes. So, right now, if you're thinking "I'd like to get a (you know) a fresh or a jump start on community college," you can do that right now.  This right here is just a Delta College early start program, how to submit, step-by-step what-to-do and all of our emails.  Spring is right around the corner, so start looking at classes that you would like to take, maybe towards your major you like to start a community college... and we can help you with that. So our E-mails are here.  We can start that process... and then there's a college early start form for Delta College. For Cosumnes River (so CRC or Los Rios). Advanced Education.  So these are the directions for that, so it's a little bit different than the Delta College one.  Advanced Education information, instructions and application... So for Spring 2021 it'll be available November 16th... so it is not available yet... You still have a couple more weeks until it is available. Deadline for Spring 2021 applications will be January 8th, so right after Christmas break they will be needed to be submitted. Then it has requirements to apply.  You must be 16 years old, you have already completed 10th Grade by the first day college classes start... you are currently enrolled in high school (you will be at Liberty Ranch) and your Unweighted high school GPA is at 2.7 or higher... So those are some main requirements you must have.   If you have more questions about this (like I keep saying), please email or call us at any time.
