Athletics' COVID-19 Protocols

August 30, 2021

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It has been wonderful to see our students back at school and our athletic programs engage in the early fall season. As you know, the participation in high school athletics is a vital component of the high school experience.

The challenge of navigating through the difficulties from the impact of COVID-19 continues to be a formidable task. In an effort to improve communication, increase information, and clarify steps to follow in the event of an exposure to someone who has tested positive for the virus or in the case when a positive result occurs, I have written a summary of the following information from the Sacramento County Public Health Department regarding COVID-19 Symptom & Quarantine Protocols.

  • If an individual has unexplained symptoms such as, but not limited to cough, sore throat, fever, fatigue, and head ache, the individual should be tested for COVID-19.

>  If the individual is negative, he or she may return to school once 24 hours have passed since the last symptom has occurred.

>  If the individual is positive, he or she may return to school on Day 11 following the date of the positive test result provided the individual is not experiencing any symptoms.  No exceptions.

  • If an individual is exposed to someone who has tested positive (15 combined minutes or more of contact with less than 6 ft. of distance from the positive individual) and the exposure occurred at school with all parties involved wearing masks:
  • A vaccinated individual can continue to come to school and participate in athletics provided that individual is not experiencing any unexplained symptoms.
  • An unvaccinated individual can continue to come to school but cannot participate in any athletic events or organized team activities until the individual has a negative test following Day 5. If a negative test after Day 5 of exposure occurs, the individual can return to athletic participation on Day 8.
  • Any individual who is exposed at school that experiences symptoms following the day of exposure must quarantine for 10 days, meaning, no school, no athletic participation.
  • If an individual is exposed to someone who has tested positive (15 combined minutes or more of contact with less than 6 ft. of distance from the positive individual) and the exposure occurred outside of  school:
  • A vaccinated individual can continue to come to school and participate in athletics provided that individual is not experiencing any unexplained symptoms.
  • An unvaccinated individual must isolate for 10 days, meaning, he or she may not attend school or any athletic events or team activities. There are no exceptions. The individual may return to school on Day 11 provided he or she is not experiencing any symptoms.

Moving forward, the hope is that the policies outlined above offer insight on the steps that  will be followed in the event of a positive COVID-19 case and/or exposure to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Please remember that the policies regarding quarantine, modified quarantine (being able to attend school only), and when quarantine is not required are disseminated by the Sacramento County Public Health Department. As a school district, we must ensure that they are followed despite personal feelings and opinions on said policies.

Thank you for your support of Liberty Ranch High School Athletics!

Sincerely,

Anthony Linebaugh
